In May, the Miasto Movie series remains in the Wild West. During our screenings, we will continue to present and explore the cinematic Western and all its related subgenres.
The Western as a genre is almost as old and distinguished as cinema itself. As early as 1903, Edwin S. Porter shocked the world with his famous “The Great Train Robbery,” featuring a key scene where a cowboy aims his revolver directly at the audience. Over the years, subsequent filmmakers have successfully developed the visual language of Wild West stories, and the genre’s landmark works often serve as turning points in film history. Notable examples include John Ford’s “Stagecoach,” Fred Zinnemann’s “High Noon,” and Sam Peckinpah’s “The Wild Bunch.” Beyond the so-called “classical Western,” we also find iconic Spaghetti Westerns, such as those by Sergio Leone; revisionist Westerns that brutally de-mythologize the frontier; comedy Westerns; and an entire branch of adventure-action films. There is plenty to choose from, and we will strive to ensure our selection is diverse, broad, and engaging.
