Polski Piach plays Reksio | concert

This is not an ordinary film screening ! It is a shared journey into the world of great adventures of the most famous Polish dog – Reksio – who will be accompanied on stage by sounds you have never heard before.

Reksio is no ordinary dog. He was created in 1967 at the Studio Filmów Rysunkowych in Bielsko-Biała. Before that, director Lechosław Marszałek abandoned plans to set Bolek and Lolek adventures in the Wild West, as he did not want children to be exposed to scenes involving weapons. He was inspired by his own fox terrier and created characters full of warmth, intelligence, and humanity. A total of 65 episodes, broadcast over 23 years, turned Reksio into a television icon and a regular guest in Polish homes.

But Reksio’s voice – the music composed by Zenon Kowalowski – was just as important. It was he who gave the dog his unique character. Today, nearly 40 years after production ended, that same world returns to the screen thanks to people who believe that improvisation can be a true language of emotions.

In 2025, commissioned by the Eufonie festival, a new soundtrack was created for six episodes of Reksio’s adventures. The music was composed by artists gathered in the Polski Piach project, coming from Warsaw’s improvised and contemporary music scene, and inspired by broadly understood blues.

Thanks to this event, children will not only discover a classic of Polish animation, but also extraordinary instruments – from guitar and bass clarinet to basetla (quite possibly the oldest string instrument in the world!), whistles, horns, and hundreds of acoustic effects. Here, music will tell the story just as vividly as the visual layer.

For adults, this will undoubtedly be a moving moment – seeing a cult childhood animation in a completely new artistic interpretation. Zenon Kowalowski created one of the most remarkable soundtracks in the history of Polish film music for Reksio, but now Patryk Zakrocki and the Polski Piach ensemble show that it can be recreated… differently. Blues, improvisation, and contemporary sounds transport the old adventures into new territories. It is also a chance to experience together with children what “music that lives” really means.

Polski Piach was founded by guitarist, improviser, and composer Patryk Zakrocki together with bass clarinetist Piotr Melech (well known on the Polish improvisational music scene) and cellist Piotr Domagalski, who comes from a jazz and folk background.

In the band’s work, a blues–jazz guitar simultaneously carries melodic and bass lines, blending with the mysteriously sounding bass clarinet and the basetla – an instrument oscillating between folk and contemporary classical music. This combination of personalities and instruments builds the group’s unique shared sound and language – a language in which one can recognize jazz, film music, and a Slavic trance.
