About
The Re:tradition – Jagiellonian Fair festival (August 21-23, 2026, Lublin) is three days full of encounters with traditional culture. The organisers have prepared selected events so that they are also accessible to people who use Polish Sign Language (PJM). Thanks to the presence of PJM interpreters, visitors will not only be able to attend selected performances but also visit craftspeople at the festival stalls, talk with them and learn more about their work.
Below is a list of events with Polish Sign Language interpretation.
Jagiellonian Fair
Did you know that during the festival, people who use Polish Sign Language (PJM) can visit the craft section of the festival with the support of PJM interpreters? Together with Jolanta Gromada or Łukasz Grzesiuk, visitors can meet craftspeople, ask about their work, their creations and the traditions they represent, and of course take the opportunity to purchase unique folk art pieces. How can you take part? Simply come to the festival information point at Łokietka Square during the interpreters’ scheduled hours. There you will meet our interpreters and join them for a walk around the Jagiellonian Fair.

If anyone thinks that children used to be better behaved in the past, they are very much mistaken! We will tell you about such little tricksters and rascals – boys and girls – who not only laughed loudly and knew what they wanted, but could even outsmart the devil himself. We love them dearly, and you will love them too!

Performance | Tangled Tales | Agnieszka Kontny and Raz-dwa-trzyk Theatre (POL) (PJM)
We invite children to a performance woven with string on the fingers of the storyteller! As part of “Zaplątane opowieści”, we will discover two stories – “O małym nietoperzu” and “O królewnie na wieży zamkniętej”.
The performance is created in the convention of string storytelling, a form rooted in oral traditions found in many cultures around the world. The storyteller illustrates the story using string figures and tricks woven before the audience’s eyes. The listener’s mind and sensitivity become part of an extraordinary play of imagination – words, gestures, and shapes intertwine and then disappear. With the help of one simple loop, a rich world of stories is created – a cave full of bats, a kidnapped princess and a sorcerer’s cauldron, a clever lizard and a snake hunting it.
Raz-dwa-trzyk Theatre creates performances with live music played on traditional instruments by female musicians. The performances include fragments of traditional songs and children’s musical games, allowing children to actively participate through singing together and repeating gestures. The youngest audiences have the opportunity to discover the sounds of traditional instruments: accordion, ocarina, baraban, frame drum, violin, and others. String stories are also richly illustrated with sounds created using clay birds, whistles, clappers, bells, and a rain stick. The musical setting forms a second layer of the performance and is one of the great strengths of Teatrzyk Raz-dwa-trzyk, appreciated by audiences for many years.

Talk | Women | Ewa Grochowska (POL) (PJM)
“Women” is Ewa Grochowska’s original lecture series, presented by Workshops of Culture since 2021 in an online format. The series features stories about remarkable women connected with traditional culture, including singers and instrumentalists.
During the festival, we invite you to another instalment of the series, this time in person. Ewa Grochowska will talk about two extraordinary women – Józefa Pidek from Bychawka and Paulina Hołysz from Strupin Duży.
Village women: singers, weavers, embroiderers, cooks, and leaders of traditional rituals. Mothers, homemakers, folk healers, and midwives. Also instrumentalists, church organists, makers of everyday and decorative objects. Women who initiated major social and cultural changes within their communities, and those who cared for both the living and the dead, whether family members or strangers. The life story of each of them has been shaped not only by what women, for centuries, had to accept because of their gender, social status, upbringing, and the detailed rules governing life in traditional communities. I see them through the lens of their extraordinary skills, talents, and inner strength, which enabled them to fulfil one of humanity’s strongest and most unique needs – the need to create.

About the Re:tradition – Jagiellonian Fair festival
Re:tradition is an extraordinary festival of traditional music and craftsmanship. During three August days and nights, Lublin transforms into the capital of living traditional culture.
The festival program offers a wide range of attractions for both children and adults. It provides a unique opportunity to meet master artisans who, each year, showcase their exceptional handmade creations. Traditional music is also a key element of the Re:tradition festival, presented both in its authentic form and through the interpretations of contemporary artists.
The festival also features evening dance parties with live music, workshops, exhibitions, performances, film screenings, and meetings. Younger visitors can enjoy the Re:tradition Playground, where traditional games and pastimes are brought back to life.
The festival allows visitors to hear, see, touch, and experience folk culture, which during this time completely fills the streets of Lublin’s Old Town.
