References to traditional Galician melodies and stories about old rituals will be heard during the Caamaño&Ameixeiras duo’s concert at the Re:tradition – Jagiellonian Fair festival (August 21–23, Lublin). Drawing on the rich heritage of Spanish Galicia, the artists will present a repertoire inspired by local folklore, especially its beliefs and dance music.
Caamaño&Ameixeiras is a group whose name comes from the surnames of two women – Sabela Caamaño (accordion) and Antía Ameixeiras (vocals, violin). The future artists encountered traditional music in childhood and, years later, gladly returned to these motifs.
While working on their first album, they referred to legendary local musicians in order to recreate the character of regional dance music. When creating material for their second album, they decided to immerse themselves in old rituals.
They wanted to learn more about them and understand them better, so they visited local museums and contacted an anthropologist who helped them enter the world of healing rituals popular in Galicia. Thanks to him, they met women who possessed a “gift” and were able to remove the so-called “air of the dead”. In these areas, there is a widespread belief that deceased people can bring pain and illness upon the living. It is therefore important to use appropriate practices to determine the cause of an ailment, where it is located and, if necessary, remove it, for example, by fumigating with specific herbs and reciting appropriate verbal formulas. This process leads to the transformation of bad air into “the air of the living”.
Both this tradition and many other beliefs and rituals became inspiration for the creation of 9 songs on the group’s latest album. Due to the festival’s theme, the artists will also sing a traditional Galician lullaby for us.
