Times are tough, but we keep fighting! The line-up of the special autumn edition of East of Culture – Different Sounds is getting new artists who will perform in Lublin between 3-6 September. We will hear, among others, Barbara Morgenstern – one of the leading representatives of the German electronic music scene sometimes called the German answer to Björk, the band MU – the latest cross-genre project of Tymon Tymański and the talents from Tricity’s contemporary scene and Antena Krzyku’s presentation expands to include the feisty guitar-led Izzy and the Black Trees and Daniel Spaleniak – a versatile musician, composer of excellent soundtracks, including for Netflix shows. This is the 13th Different Sounds festival and its 7th edition as part of the East of Culture project organised by the National Centre for Culture from the funds of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage in Lublin, Białystok and Rzeszów.
Barbara Morgenstern – one of the leading artists of the German electronic scene, for years signed with the German label Monika Enterprise led by Gudrun Gut (a producer and artist, a member of Einstürzende Neubauten’s first line-up). Barbara Morgenstern has released 10 albums, and has collaborated with other musicians, including Robert Wyatt, Stefan Schneider or Julia Kent. She is known for her artistic and stylistic explorations, combining and mixing music genres and her experiments with sound. Over the years, she developed a creative and an original approach to electronic music, synth pop, music remixing but also folk and songwriting. She sings, composes, plays the piano and the guitar and keeps broadening the field of her artistic interests, and perfectly fits the stylistic criteria of Different Sounds.
MU – In the world of Polish alternative culture, Tymon Tymański is a genuine one-man-institution: a musician, composer and producer, writer, columnist, filmmaker, a man with an artistic ADHD. The artist has won “Orzeł” (Eagle) Polish Film Award for the music to Wojciech Smarzowski’s film “Wesele” (“The Wedding”) and the audience award for the film “Polskie gówno” (Polish shit) at the Polish Film Festival in Gdynia. He has co-created such famous musical and artistic phenomena as Totart or yass and fronted countless bands, among others, Miłość and Kury. In 2015, on a special commission for the East of Culture – Different Sounds festival, Tymon Tymański & the Different Sounds Orchestra premiered the anti-war concert-manifesto “Wojna to przeżytek” (War is a relic) in Lublin. Now he returns with a new, ambitious and enigmatic band called MU. MU is a fusion of post-rock, jazz, synth pop and electronics, and to this unusual line-up Tymon invited his regular guitarist and co-producer Marcin Gałązka and the greatest talents of the contemporary Tricity scene: Michał Wandzilak, Jacek Próściński and Michał Jan Ciesielski. \
Izzy and the Black Trees – another gem released by Antena Krzyku and one of the more interesting young guitar bands in Poland. The band is fronted by Iza “Izzy” Rekowska – responsible, among others, for the band’s lyrics and sound based on classic rock instrument set (guitar, bass, drums). Stylistic inspirations include Patti Smith, PJ Harvey or Yeah Yeah Yeahs, but they also send us towards such genres as punk, American or noise. “Trust no one” is a fresh, feisty and energetic album. It’s a perfect fit for Antena Krzyku’s catalogue, while Izzy and the Black trees have a dazzling future ahead of them.
Daniel Spaleniak – one of the most interesting artists of the Polish music scene, eluding simple classifications. For the past several years, he has consistently and successfully followed his chosen path. He makes both illustrative and instrumental music and original songs somewhere near blues, folk or rock. Daniel Spaleniak has released four albums, all published by Antena Krzyku. Many fans also know him as the composer of excellent soundtracks and tracks used in TV series, Netflix, CBS, Hulu or TNT productions.
