The Sunday evening concert of the Re:tradition – Jagiellonian Fair festival (August 21–23, 2026, Lublin) will feature traditional Serbian songs surrounded by the distinctive, densely layered sounds of percussion, bass guitar, and electronic effects. They will be brought to life by Gordan, a band that combines Balkan folklore with the experimental sound of contemporary music.
This unusual setting for tradition is created by Austrian drummer Andi Stecher and German multi-instrumentalist Guido Möbius. Their contemporary interpretations intertwine with the rich and powerful voice of Svetlana Spajić, a Serbian artist who has spent more than 30 years exploring the intricacies of traditional singing.
She performs songs from many regions of Serbia, as well as from places such as the Croatian region of Dalmatia, home to a Serbian minority. The repertoire passed down to her by master singers is presented not only in its traditional form, but also through a variety of new artistic projects – including her work with Gordan.
Here, folklore meets contemporary music, while ancient vocal forms merge with experimental musical techniques. The result is a richly textured and, at times, unsettling whole that leaves ample room for improvisation – both vocal and instrumental.
Those wishing to explore traditional Serbian songs can also take part in singing workshops led by Svetlana Spajić. Registration for the workshops will open in August via the retradycja.eu website.
