Over the next two spring months, the Miasto Movie cycle heads to the Wild West. During our screenings, we will present and explore the cinematic western and its many related subgenres.
Description
The western as a genre is almost as old and as distinguished as cinema itself. As early as 1903, Edwin S. Porter shocked audiences with his famous The Great Train Robbery, in which, in a key scene, a cowboy points his revolver directly at the audience. Over the years, successive filmmakers have successfully developed the language of Wild West storytelling, and many landmark works of the genre have become turning points in film history. These include Stagecoach by John Ford, High Noon by Fred Zinnemann, and The Wild Bunch by Sam Peckinpah.
Beyond the so-called classical western, there are also iconic spaghetti westerns—most notably those by Sergio Leone—as well as anti-westerns that brutally demythologize the Wild West, comedic westerns, and an entire branch of action-adventure films. There is plenty to choose from, and we will do our best to make this selection diverse, wide-ranging, and engaging.
