Mosaic City
Mosaic City is a collaborative Polish-Ukrainian endeavour revitalizing the mosaic art heritage of the PRL and Ukrainian SSR eras.
Once vibrant adornments of public buildings and residential estates, these mosaics, often imbued with propagandistic messages, now risk oblivion or destruction amidst modern renovations. Our project seeks to reclaim their artistic significance, fostering renewed appreciation for this shared cultural legacy. By uniting architects, urban planners, and visual artists—a synergy emblematic of the Soviet period—we aim to create new mosaics in Lublin that both honour the past and enrich the present.
Drawing inspiration from existing mosaics, like those in the Juliusz Słowacki estate, and guided by renowned experts Inga Levi, coordinator of mosaic restoration in Kyiv, and Paulina Garbiec, co-founder of the Social Mosaic Studio, we envision a revitalised Mosaic City that celebrates the enduring power of art.
Key activities will feature artistic mosaic interventions, inviting participation from art school volunteers. The project will document existing Lublin mosaics for a special exhibition. We’ll delve into the history of mosaics in the PRL era through dedicated events, and offer mosaic workshops and themed walks around the city.
The project is organised by Kultura Enter Foundation in partnership with Workshops of Culture in Lublin and with the support of the City of Lublin.
ECC 2029: “Re:Union”
The project is part of the “RE:UNION” programme – Lublin’s bid for the European Capital of Culture in 2029. It aims to foster intergenerational and intercultural dialogue, while honouring our local history. By preserving and promoting our cultural heritage, we aim to unite our community around our shared history. “The mosaic city” bridges the past and the present, creating a platform for artistic collaboration between Poland and Ukraine, and inviting local residents to participate in creative and educational activities.
