We’re closing the concert line-up of this year’s East of Culture – Different Sounds with unique artists. Joining the programme are: the afrobeat big band Nubiyan Twist, Dengue Dengue Dengue – an electronic duet rooted in South American dance music, shishi – surf rock female trio from Vilnius and the sensational Ayoub Houmanna & Nomads Moods. In the meantime, Poland will be represented by: the phenomenally talented representatives of new wave of jazz – the sextet EABS, the absolute legend of Tricity’s Alternative Music Scene – the band Bielizna as well as representatives of young Lublin’s music stage, Złote Twarze Live Band. This year’s edition of the festival takes place between 3-6 September, and it’s the 13th edition of Different Sounds and its 7th iteration as part of East of Culture, a project carried out by the National Centre for Culture in cooperation with the local governments of Lublin, Białystok and Rzeszów, financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.
Nubiyan Twist – The London-based jazz-afrobeat big band is one of the hottest bands in its genre and an absolute dynamite at concerts, featuring 10 people on stage, drums and percussions, an extensive brass section, keyboards, bass and guitars, and a phenomenal vocal. The entire orchestra moves with great ease and grace between jazz, reggae, soul and a wide range of African and Latin American sounds. Their visit and concert will remind us all how much joy and positive energy music can bring and how much we all need it, especially in such tough times. It’s also worth mentioning that Nubiyan Twist’s latest album features two legends who appeared at Different Sounds in the past – Tony Allen and Mulatu Astatke.
Dengue Dengue Dengue – electronic duo from Peru, basing their work on traditional dance music with roots in South America, fused with contemporary sounds of European club music scene. The artists, stationed in Berlin, will come to perform their only concert in Poland. Their sets are a fusion of such genres as cumbia, electro, hip-hop, but they also use classic samples of the music of south American legends (like Lucha Reyes).Dengue Dengue Dengue like no other can get a party going and shake up a festival’s audience. It won’t be any different at their concert in Lublin.
shishi – surf rock female trio from Vilnius is one of the best, and the most original, bands in the music scene of our neighbours. This unique group consists of three original artists working under the monikers Bernadetta, Victoria and Maria Rosa. As they say, they represent their own original style “zero waste thrash music”, with strong feminist and ecological themes. The Lithuanians perfectly fit into the concept of Different Sounds and are sure to be one of the most vibrant bands of the upcoming edition of the festival.
EABS –Electro-Acoustic Beat Sessions is one of the most important bands in contemporary Polish music scene. This Wrocław-based sextet took the fans of jazz and contemporary electronics by storm. Their first album Repetitions (Letters to Krzysztof Komeda)” was a big event in Poland, winning a number of awards and distinctions (including Jazz Forum or Gazeta Mangetofonowa). Their second and, more importantly, equally successful album Slavic Spirits” has established their position of rising jazz stars. The time has come for EABS to introduce themselves live to the audiences at Different Sounds.
Bielizna – an absolute legend of Tricity’s Alternative Scene, continuously fronted since the 1980s by the first-rate lyricist Jarek “Doktor” Janiszewski. Bielizna is a one-of-a-kind band, impossible to copy, and from the beginning characterised by their own individual style. On the one hand, we have catchy guitar riffs and rock energy, on the other hand, complicated, multi-layered compositions with broken rhythm and original structure. When we add to this intelligent, often grotesque or ironic lyrics, we get a band that escapes simple genre stereotypes. The band returns to Lublin after many years and will be a real treat for older fans. For younger fans, it might be the first opportunity to see this important Polish alternative music band.
Ayoub Houmanna & Nomads Moods – a collective fronted by Ayoub Houmanna, a Moroccan artist and globetrotter who has settled in Warsaw, where he creates his music. To the project Nomads Moods the musician has invited, among others, the Lublin-born harmonica virtuoso Bartosz Łęczycki, the first-rate bassist Christopher Li’nard Jackson and the percussionist Adam Lewnadowski. Their band is a sensational fusion of blues, jazz, flamenco, desert ethnic music from Berber and Tuareg circles, but also rock or funk music. Nomads Moods is an energetic and very eclectic band, boldly fusing tradition with the search for fresh sounds.
Złote Twarze Live Band – the project is fronted by the famous Lublin-based musician and producer Przemysław “Golden” Adach. For years, the artist has been delving into widely understood electronic music, exploring such styles as trip-hop, downtempo or ambient. In concerts, Złote Twarze is a quartet built on the sounds of electric guitar, drums, cello, completed with a portion of electronics and vocals.
