East of Culture \u2013 Different Sounds festival (July 2-5, Lublin) kicks off next Thursday. A regular and much-loved part of the festival programme is a series of events designed especially for children and young people. This year, the youngest participants will embark on a family sound walk and discover the sonic potential of tools that are usually associated with work rather than music. They will also create collages inspired by the music of artists performing at the festival, and take part in creative writing and spoken word workshops, with sound as the central theme.<\/strong><\/p>\n This year marks the 19th edition of Different Sounds festival, organised by Workshops of Culture in Lublin, and the 13th edition held as part of East of Culture \u2013 a project delivered by the National Centre for Culture with funding from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, in partnership with three cities in eastern Poland: Lublin, Bia\u0142ystok and Rzesz\u00f3w.<\/p>\n Little Different Sounds is the educational programme accompanying the East of Culture \u2013 Different Sounds festival. Its aim is to introduce children and young people to the world of music, sound and a wide variety of musical genres. The programme demonstrates that music can be much more than entertainment \u2013 it can also be a space for learning, nurturing imagination and encouraging creative expression. An important part of the programme is the opportunity to meet artists in person, fostering direct engagement with the world of music.<\/p>\n When:<\/strong> July 3, 2026 (Friday), 14.00-16.00 The collage workshop inspired by the music of the East of Culture \u2013 Different Sounds festival is an opportunity to combine listening with creating and let your imagination take the lead. Participants will begin the session by learning the basics of collage through a series of short practical exercises designed to familiarize them with the materials, form, and principles of visual composition.<\/p>\n In the second part of the workshop, everyone will create their own intuitive artwork based on the emotions and associations evoked by selected tracks from artists performing at this year\u2019s festival.<\/p>\n The workshop will provide a space for free expression, experimentation, and the discovery of new means of artistic expression.<\/p>\n Led by Ola Marz\u0119ta and Ania St\u0105porek<\/strong><\/p>\n Ola Marz\u0119ta<\/strong> is a visual artist whose creative practice focuses on themes of memory, identity, and family relationships. She explores how the experiences of previous generations resonate in the present and how they can be engaged with through art. In her work, she draws on archival materials, photography, and textiles. Rooted in personal experience, her projects take on a universal dimension, becoming stories about connection and heritage. She is a graduate of the Faculty of Art and Design at the University of the National Education Commission in Krak\u00f3w, where she is currently continuing her studies in the Art & Design program. Alongside her artistic practice, she works as a graphic designer, with a particular focus on publication design.<\/p>\n Ania St\u0105porek<\/strong> is a visual artist working in photography and graphic design. Through bookbinding and hand-sewn publications, she explores the possibilities of the book as an artistic form. Her passion for typography and collecting zines informs her interests, which take on a practical, workshop-oriented dimension and become a story about craftsmanship and the materiality of print. She is a student at the Faculty of Art and Design of the University of the National Education Commission in Krak\u00f3w and serves as editor of the student magazine MagaZin. Professionally, she works in graphic design, specializing in Adobe InDesign. In her free time, she is an avid cyclist and a devoted gluten expert.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n <\/p>\n When:<\/strong> July 3, 2026 (Friday), 15.00-17.00 A word does not always like to lie flat on a page. Sometimes it whistles, spins, or makes noise; sometimes it needs silence (the kind of silence you can hear). A whole collection of such words can emerge \u2013 ordered or deconstructed. Add our own voices and other sounds, and suddenly a brief moment can become an entire universe.<\/p>\n Join us for a creative writing and spoken word workshop centered around sound. We hear something \u2013 but how do we tell its story? How do we write it down when we’re not dealing with musical notation or graphic scores?<\/p>\n Through a workshop scenario created especially for this occasion, we will disappear for two hours into a world filled with sounds and their meanings. Don\u2019t worry \u2013 it will be a safe and welcoming space with a creative atmosphere where everyone can find their place. Together, we will create a map that helps us navigate this topic, explore it from as many angles as possible, and carry those perspectives with us afterward.<\/p>\n You can expect an engaging process, a stimulating workout for the mind, and an experience that will leave you feeling grounded, relaxed, and ready to immerse yourself in the evening concerts.<\/p>\n Anyone who would like to experience the satisfaction of describing reality and the experiences connected to it will feel right at home in this workshop, whether they write regularly or only from time to time. It is also a great opportunity for those who simply want to look at writing from an unconventional perspective.<\/p>\n Led by Zuzanna Szmidt<\/strong><\/p>\n Zuzanna Szmidt<\/strong> is a cultural animator and producer. She has been involved in poetry slam since 2012. In 2015, she founded Tupot Poetycki, a recurring slam event held at the M\u00d3ZG club in Bydgoszcz, a venue regarded as one of the strongest slam scenes in Poland. Since 2019, she has been leading creative writing workshops. Words, images, and sounds have always been close to her heart, and these are the areas she is most passionate about exploring.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n <\/p>\n When:<\/strong> July 4, 2026 (Saturday), 14.00-16.00 We invite young sound explorers and future composers to take part in a unique workshop where hammers, drills, steel pipes, and concrete slabs will be transformed into real musical instruments! This is not an ordinary music workshop \u2013 it is an experiment at the intersection of music, technology, and unrestricted creativity. Participants will create their own sound collage inspired by the city, construction sites, and the everyday materials that surround us.<\/p>\n During the workshop, children will discover the sonic potential of tools that are usually associated with work rather than music. They will record these intriguing sounds, combine them, and collaboratively create a sound piece that will be professionally recorded at the end of the session. Participants will leave not only with a new creative experience, but also with the understanding that technology and engineering can be imaginative and expressive, not just practical.<\/p>\n Led by Nikodem Pa\u015bnicki<\/strong><\/p>\n Nikodem Pa\u015bnicki<\/strong> is a musician and animator. Sound plays a central role in his life, but his interest in visual art emerged first: at the age of just a few years old, he painted a child\u2019s-eye view of his village landscape directly onto his bedroom wall. Animation eventually allowed him to combine these two creative fields, which he had previously pursued separately. In early 2023, he released his debut ambient EP, \u201cGrudzie\u0144\u201d (December<\/em>). In September 2025, together with his brother Piotr Pa\u015bnicki, he released \u201cAtlas\u201d, an instrumental post-rock journey through the towns and villages of eastern Poland. Alongside his musical work, he has created several animated films, including \u201cFORT IV\u201d, \u201cPRZEPRASZAM\u201d (I\u2019m Sorry<\/em>), and \u201cMaszynista Grot\u201d (Grot the Train Driver<\/em>), based on a short story by Stefan Grabi\u0144ski.<\/p>\n The event takes place thanks to the support of Strabag<\/strong><\/a>, sponsor of the East of Culture \u2013 Different Sounds festival.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/details>\n <\/p>\n Start time changed to 13.00!<\/strong><\/p>\n When:<\/strong> July 5, 2026 (Sunday), 13.00-14.30 What does grass sound like when it sways in the wind? What sounds do insects hidden among the shrubs make? How does a park change when we close our eyes and focus solely on listening? We invite families with children (aged 6 and up) to embark on an extraordinary journey into the world of sounds in Lublin\u2019s People’s Park.<\/p>\n During this family sound walk, we will momentarily set aside what we see in order to discover the richness of sounds that often go unnoticed in our everyday lives. We will listen closely to the rustling of leaves and the voices of the park\u2019s many inhabitants, experiencing the natural world from an entirely new perspective. Who knows how many fascinating sonic stories are hidden all around us in the People’s Park?<\/p>\n Participants can look forward to:<\/p>\n \u2013 Listening to the micro-world: we will stop at different spots throughout the park to tune in to \u201cwhat\u2019s chirping in the grass\u201d \u2013 from the rustling of leaves to the sounds made by the smallest inhabitants of green spaces;<\/p>\n \u2013 Exploring what is audible and what is hidden from the ear: we will discover which sounds reach us naturally and which become accessible only through a specialist microphone that amplifies subtle acoustic details \u2013 a chance to explore the city\u2019s fascinating sonic microcosm;<\/p>\n \u2013 Talking about sounds and listening experiences: we will reflect on which sounds we enjoy most, which we find pleasant, and which evoke unease or irritation. We will discuss how sounds influence our emotions and shape the way we perceive our surroundings;<\/p>\n \u2013 Discovering together: this is not only a walk but also an opportunity to experiment with attentive listening and explore how our perception of the world changes when we give more attention to sound.<\/p>\n Led by Katarzyna Michalak<\/strong><\/p>\n Katarzyna Michalak<\/strong> is originally from \u0141\u00f3d\u017a and holds a degree in Polish Studies. Since 1999, she has been associated with the Radio Lublin Documentary Department, which she headed from 2011 to 2018. What fascinates her about radio documentary is the opportunity for close encounters with people and the unique nature of sound as a storytelling medium \u2013 a subject that also formed the basis of her doctoral research. She is a co-founder of the Audionomia Foundation and co-author of the audio education handbook \u201cS\u0142uchaj, aby zrozumie\u0107\u201d. A two-time recipient of the prestigious Prix Italia, she has also received numerous other major broadcasting awards, including Prix Europa, Grand Press, Prix Maruli\u0107, and the Golden Microphone.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n <\/p>\n The East of Culture \u2013 Different Sounds<\/strong><\/a> festival is a tribute to musicians who choose authenticity over popularity built on artistic compromise. At a time when culture is increasingly becoming a luxury commodity, Different Sounds serves as a reminder that quality should never be a privilege. It is an event for those who believe that music can be a space for encounter, reflection, and a sense of community\u2014not merely consumption.
