Literary Salon: Excerpts from “The Brass Age” by Slobodan Šnajder – A Pre-publication Reading
About
Kempf and his countrymen leave their homeland in search of a better future, settling in Slavonia (a historical region in eastern Croatia, located between the Sava and Drava rivers). Over the years and generations, the Germans make Slavonia their home. But in 1940, as Europe is once again at war, this minority is called to fight for the Reich, a country that is now foreign to them.
“The Brass Age,” a masterpiece by Slobodan Šnajder, is a forthcoming novel from Workshops of Culture. It is both a family saga and a powerful historical novel about the fate of those who are shackled by history, about generations destined to inherit the conflicting fates of their ancestors. Šnajder draws on his own biography to capture two hundred years of conflicts and divisive ideologies. In the process, he reconstructs a world that has fallen apart.
Slobodan Šnajder (born 1948 in Zagreb) graduated in philosophy and English from the Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb. He was a co-founder and long-time editor of the theater magazine Prolog. Active in various literary genres, he has been publishing prose since 1966 and working as a playwright since 1969.
During the event, excerpts from the Polish edition of the book will be read by Anna Dudziak and Jarosław Zoń. Elżbieta Sokołowska, the book’s editor, will introduce the book and its author. The musical accompaniment will be provided by Tomasz Graczyk.
