Non-kitchen makatka | presentation of works
About the event
What if, instead of reminding us about order in the kitchen, makatkas (wall hangings) commented on the modern world, mocked stereotypes or told stories from our lives? During the ‘Non-kitchen makatka’ workshop, we will take a traditional form and give it a completely new meaning.
Did you know that wall hangings didn’t actually start their journey in the countryside? The trend came to Poland from Germany and the Netherlands, where they already adorned bourgeois houses in the 19th century. It was only later that they found their way into workers’ and rural homes.
We will create our own wall hangings by combining traditional slogans with drawings and graphics. There will be room for humour, mischievous associations, personal stories and playing with language. We will look for inspiration in everyday sayings, Lublin dialect and regionalisms, as well as in words that sound a bit retro today, but still have a lot of character.
We will not be embroidering on fabric – our wall hangings will take the contemporary form of drawings and graphic designs on paper. If you prefer to work digitally, you can bring your own computer or tablet and create a project in the programme of your choice.
We will work on the verbal aspect with Justyna Jary, and on the visual aspect with Matylda Damięcka. Together, we will explore how to combine words and images to create something surprising, fun or unexpectedly relatable.
We will divide the workshop into two parts: first, we will come up with content and slogans, and then we will give them a visual form. You don’t need to come with a ready-made idea – all you need is an open mind to find your own way of talking about the world.
We will present the results of the joint workshop on the same day at the Bałagan Pub. Alongside original works, there will be ready-made wall hanging designs with space for your own slogans. This will be an invitation to linguistic fun for the audience, as well as a collection of retro words with definitions that can be taken away as a small linguistic souvenir.
After the presentation, you will be able to collect your work and take it home.
