Songs of Herbs | Part 3: Hemp

In our next episode of Songs of Herbs, Ania Broda will tell us about hemp which along with flax used to be an important element of the landscape of Polish villages . It was used to make ropes or materials that were later used in the household. There were special songs and dances performed on the last evening before Lent in order to ensure a good growth of these plants in the coming season.  This time Ania will focus on songs whose titles refer to hemp – konopielka. These songs were sung in the Easter period by men who visited houses of maids to pay their respects and court them.

As you know, this year The Jagiellonian Fair focuses on herbs. We want to show you that these special plants are not just an important element of nature, but also culture. They are used as motifs in traditional crafts and visual arts, beliefs and songs.

And it is on this last topic that we will focus this time. We have asked Ania Broda, who uses traditional music in her work, to present interpretations of old songs that talk about plants.

What did komnopielka songs from Podlasie include? Listen yourselves!
