“Illustrating Words” – book illustration workshops

“Illustrating Words” is a project by Workshops of Culture in Lublin dedicated to creating graphics inspired by literature.

In November and December, the project hosted two cycles of educational workshops designed for both readers (children and teenagers) and creators (illustrators). It was a period of intensive learning, inspiring meetings, and the practical development of artistic skills under the guidance of outstanding specialists.

The sessions were focused on the interpretation of literary texts, transforming them into visual narratives, and developing illustration techniques—both traditional and digital. The workshops combined theoretical components with practical exercises, allowing participants to develop their skills comprehensively. All meetings were accessible via interpretation into Polish Sign Language (PJM), Ukrainian, and English, ensuring they were open to a wide audience.

The Mentors and Their Creative Laboratories
The project brought together renowned creators who shared their expertise across different styles and formats:

Maciej Pałka introduced children and teenagers to the secrets of creating comics and zines. His workshops covered various stages of production—from the initial idea and script to the final visual development. Participants learned about the history of Polish comics and tried their hand at this art form. The result is a series of four zines summarizing each workshop day, inspired by Mark Livin’s book Riki and the Roads (published by Wschodni Express).

Marta Ignerska invited participants to explore diverse graphic techniques, such as dry and oil pastels, ink, and pencil. The sessions focused on interpreting literary excerpts from selected books published by Wschodni Express. The workshops also covered professional graphic software and the technical preparation of books for print. Participants analyzed high-quality illustrated books from around the world, and Marta introduced them to the world of animation by presenting her own works that combine drawing with digital techniques.

Grażka Lange focused her workshops on the process of creating picture books. Using the Dadaist method, participants created their own books based on randomly selected words. The sessions also featured a presentation of landmark picture books—from classics like Janusz Stanny and Józef Wilkoń to contemporary illustrators. One-on-one feedback sessions and discussions on aesthetics and visual narration allowed participants to deepen their knowledge of book design.

Project Outcomes and Goals
As part of the project, a short video guide was produced, in which the mentors shared their experiences and professional advice on creating book illustrations.

The implementation of this project aimed to:

Develop participants’ artistic skills and promote innovation.

Strengthen digital competencies and stimulate ecological sensitivity.

Build professional networks within the illustration industry.

Increase interest in literature and the picture book format.

It was an excellent opportunity to experiment with various techniques, discover new forms of expression, and draw inspiration from some of the best creators in Poland. The “Illustrating Words” project has left a lasting impression on its participants, inspiring them to pursue further creative endeavors and experiments with books and illustration.
