Research in placemaking for alternative narratives — trans-making”

A research project funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement n°734855, Research and Innvation Staff Exchange (RISE). Workshops of Culture as one of the 23 international partners of the project, take part in research and staff exchange, looking for solutions and answers to challenges faced by contemporary Europe.

The trans-making project aims to establish a multilateral network of research and innovation staff active in the fields of placemaking / place-based art activities as a space to create alternative narratives for societal and economic renewal. It will investigate and experiment with placemaking to contribute actively to the democratization/well-being of society.

The objective is to strengthen research capacities, through exchange of knowledge and expertise between academic and non-academic partners from Europe and Third Countries in a shared research programme focused on: Collecting, Documenting / Exploring, Experimenting / Performing / Designing. Through this research programme, the consortium aims to encourage links between art and culture, economy, democracy and innovation at EU level and beyond.

The project will foster a better understanding and knowledge sharing between scientific community, stakeholders and policy-makers. Which will be achieved with the respective networks of the involved partners. The final aim of trans-making will be to establish a long term collaboration among the partners in order to have a scientific and innovative worldwide community.

The Valencian fire festival, or Las Fallas de Valencia, is a two-week-long city carnival whose focal point are sculptures that fill the streets. They are designed by professional artists and made of cardboard, wood, and wax. On 19 March, the final night of Las Fallas, these monuments are ceremoniously set ablaze and burned. The artworks typically offer satirical perspectives on current, local events, while also making salient points about the most significant affairs and concerns of the day. All professional pieces of art are accompanied by smaller collections of "nintos," or "children's," sculptures created by kids in a particular neighbourhood.
