About the event
During the workshop, we will focus on a game that was once popular in the area around Lubartów. It is an opportunity to learn the rules of this old game, try your hand at Lubartów pick-up sticks and spend time together playing a game with a history of its own.
The pick-up sticks that we now call Lubartów pick-up sticks are a dexterity game that children played in the 19th and 20th centuries. The pick-up sticks of the time did not resemble the sticks we know today, but had their own distinctive appearance and rules. The shape of these carved wooden sticks was reminiscent of household tools, decorative porch columns or the tags that farmers used to mark their sheep. If you would like to see (and try!) what playing Lubartów pick-up sticks is like, we invite you to join us.
The workshop will be led by Stanisław Sadownik and his father, Rafał Sadownik.

About the “Warstwy – dzieciństwo” project
The project explores the childhoods of our ancestors as well as our own, approaching the subject both through the lens of family memory and the memory of local communities, while highlighting the value of building home collections that document the past.
By taking part in the workshops, we will learn ways of searching for information about the lives of previous generations (including in state archives), preserving keepsakes, and collecting stories that we can still access. We will discover how important and fascinating it is to create our own family archives, how creatively the materials we gather can be used, and what values can be discovered by immersing ourselves in folk games or songs. We will also have an opportunity to learn about old photographic techniques and create a commemorative portrait.
