Understanding autism – screening of “X+Y” and a lesson in diversity | The Art of Sensitivity
About the event
We invite students from primary and secondary schools to a screening of “X+Y” followed by a discussion on, among other things, tolerance. The screenings will take place from October to December 2026.
The main character of the film is Nathan, a teenage mathematical genius. The boy is excellent at solving the most complicated problems, but he has difficulty forming relationships with other people, especially with his mother. He is like a turtle hiding inside its shell. He has struggled with autism since childhood. The only person who understood him was his father, who died tragically in a car accident.
Friendless and quiet, Nathan dreams of winning an international mathematics competition. He is helped in his preparations by a rather unconventional teacher, Mr Humphreys. The final stage before the big event, a science camp in China, causes quite a stir in Nathan’s carefully planned life. Will he be able to cope with such an irrational force as love? “X + Y” is a moving story about the challenges of living with autism and overcoming one’s own barriers.
After the screening, there will be a discussion about neurodiversity, tolerance, and exclusion in peer groups. Participants will seek to broaden their awareness of the autism spectrum and its manifestations. There will also be an opportunity to learn to be more sensitive to the needs of people facing various challenges.
