About the film
Director Nadine Labaki, known for her work on “Caramel,” delivers a powerful and emotional story in this renowned film. The protagonist, Zain (played brilliantly by Zain Al Rafeea), resides in Beirut’s slums with other neglected and hungry children. Despite the harsh environment, Zain strives to maintain his dignity. However, when he reaches a breaking point, he takes drastic action and enlists the help of a local lawyer, Nadine (portrayed by Labaki herself), to sue his own parents. Zain accuses them of neglect and wasting his and his siblings’ childhood, and consequently, of being born at all. The film raises thought-provoking questions and leaves a lasting impact on the audience.
