Miasto Movie analogue: VHS night at Bałagan pub | Miasto Movie

3rd October 2012 marked the launch of Miasto Movie film screenings. This inaugural event, held at the former Workshops of Culture building at Popiełuszki 5, and featured Wim Wenders’ masterpiece, “Lisbon Story”. Over the next 10 years, the film series took on many different forms, ranging from traditional Wednesday film nights held at the institution through summer outdoor cinema, special shows for kids and projections accompanied by live music, to fun VHS screenings. In all this time, we have shown hundreds of original movies, each reflecting distinct trends, genres, and stages in the evolution of global cinematography.

For us, the project’s most significant accomplishment is the fact that our wonderful, devoted audience has remained with us and that Miasto movie has become an integral part of their lives, just as it has for us. Such people, moviegoers and cinephiles deserve ambitious, valuable and original film listings, and we find it rewarding to create them. When we first launched the project 10 years ago, one of our objectives was to raise the quality of the city’s cinema offerings. Looking back now, we believe we have succeeded in our mission. Join us in October for a fun-filled jubilee event celebrating the ten years of Miasto Movie.

About the films

Lethal Weapon – the first part of one of the greatest and most influential series in the history of action films. Richard Donner, the master of entertainment cinema ( “The Goonies”, “The Omen”) creates an explosive fusion of action, humour, feel-good movies, but also crime fiction. For years, “Lethal Weapon” set the standard for this type of productions and, remarkably, maintained a consistently high standard for the next three parts. The film’s strongest point, aside from Shane Black’s fantastic story, is the phenomenal acting work of the two major protagonists. The roles of Mel Gibson’s eccentric Martin Riggs, and Danny Glover’s cool-headed and collected Roger Murtaugh have undoubtedly gone down in the history of cinema. Their nemesis in the first part of the series was the menacing Joshua, portrayed in an outstanding performance by Gary Busey. Even after all these years, “Lethal Weapon” remains fun to watch and hasn’t lost any of its charm.

Die Hard  is often considered as the best and the most iconic entry in this legendary series of films. The first meeting between the cop John McClayn and the terrorists who overran Nakatomi Plaza is a masterpiece of action cinema and an iconic favourite of many movie goers. The film owes much of its success to a number of important factors, including  John McTiernan’s superb direction and set design (previous credits include “Predator” and “The Hunt for the Red October”), an expertly crafted balance between action, humour and drama, the Christmas setting of the film that makes it all the more unique, and Alan Rickman’s outstanding performance as the villainous Hans Gruber. However, the film coud have never become a hit without Bruce Willis, whose career-defining performance in Die Hard catapulted him to the top of Hollywood and kept him there for years. His John McClane is a reluctant hero, a worn-out, jaded man wearing a ripped T-shirt, but at the same time he’s brave, courageous and adored by millions of moviegoers around the globe.
