Clean-a-holics! | Estera Mrówka’s art exhibition | Biopolis
About the event
This October, we invite children and their families and friends to see Estera Mrówka’s graphic art exhibition “Clean-a-holics!” as part of the “Biopolis” project.
Things like washing our hands frequently, brushing our teeth morning and evening, washing our bed linen regularly or changing our underwear every day are obvious to most of us – so much so that we often no longer give them a second thought. But why do we actually do these things? Is hygiene merely a set of oppressive rules that restrict our freedom and self-expression, or are they backed by years of scientific research and the experience of medical professionals?
What hygiene-related problems did our ancestors struggle with that we no longer have the slightest trouble with? Or perhaps some of the old rules are no longer relevant today? Should we expand the list of hygiene rules in our time?
These and other questions are explored by the artist in her illustrations. She takes a closer look at the hygiene rules we are familiar with and tries to rethink them – to see which are still relevant and which may need updating.
Can you be too clean? What does an “unhygienic lifestyle” mean today? Should we also include lack of exercise, insufficient exposure to daylight, excessive screen time, an unhealthy diet or too little sleep? And what would children and school students add to the list?
The exhibition is an invitation to take a closer look at our everyday habits – to ask simple, sometimes provocative questions and consider what taking care of our hygiene actually means today.
The exhibition will be accompanied by an educational program for organized groups and families.
About the artist
Estera Mrówka – a visual artist based between Kraków and Warsaw. She has always gravitated toward workshops – first an automotive one, where her cousins tinkered with machinery, and later a printmaking studio, where she works with paints, emulsions, and paper. A graduate of the Printmaking Department at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków, she is currently professionally affiliated with her alma mater. In her art, she seeks to address significant themes with a touch of humor and lightness. She experiments with form and format while centering her practice on the traditional printmaking technique of screen printing.
