“Faces of cinema” – Miato Movie’s marathon night

Since the  beginning of Miasto movie, we have worked hard to present film in all of its varied forms in a full and all-encompassing manner, to demonstrate how the elegance of working with a cinematic image may result in true art when fantastic cinematography and editing are combined.  How cinematography, a powerful medium for expressing the imagination of filmnmakers,  transports audiences to magical settings and realms.  How to draw inspiration from both grand, epic stories and small, personal stories. It reflects the essence of cinema as a unique medium and cultural phenomenon that emerged about 130 years ago and changed the path of history. Throughout our jubilee marathon night, we will attempt to portray the diverse mindsets and societal standards of contemporary cinema and explore the enchanting realm of cinematography.

Films

Żeby nie było śladów – Following the massive popularity of “Ostatnia rodzina,” a film about the fate of the Beksiński family, Jan P. Matuszyński decided to focus on one of the darkest periods of the communist era. The director offers his perspective on the case of Grzegorz Przemyk, a student who was beaten to death and executed by militiamen. It’s 1983, Poland is under martial law, and the atmosphere is oppressive and tense. In these bleak circumstances, young people like Grzegorz Przemyk’s friend, student Jurek Popiel (played by Tomasz Zitek), strive to find their way. Jurek, the only witness to the  militiamen’s crime, is engaged in a difficult, risky, and dangerous fight for justice. Barbara Sadowska (played by Sandra Korzeniak), a well-known poet and oppositionist, who is also Przemyk’s mother, supports Jurek in his fight against the callous communist authorities.

Official Competition – The Spanish-Argentinian comedy-drama Official Competition explores the meaning and nature of art as well as the filmmaking process. The plot of “Official Competition” begins when a fabulously rich millionaire decides he wants to make an unforgettable cinematic masterpiece that would go down in history.  As one might expect, the task is not easy. Lola (Penelope Cruz), a well-known but quirky filmmaker, decides to take on this ambitious project. She starts by putting together a cast that will fit the intended vision of the project. She assigns the lead roles to Ivan (Oscar Martinez) – a living legend of the theatre and Felix (Antonio Banderas), a famous Hollywood star. From here on out, the director will have to deal with the egos of both performers, the millionaire’s high expectations, an insane production and her personal problems. “Official Competition” is a lot of fun and provides an insightful look at the world of contemporary cinema.

Lost Highway – one of David Lynch’s best and most representative movies in his vast filmography. The master of postmodernism, mystery, and suspense is in top form here, displaying his best work to the audience. The plot of “Lost Highway” starts when a popular saxophonist Fred (Bill Pullman) discovers a sinister videotape on his porch. The victim of the gruesome murder captured on the tape looks like Renee, Fred’s wife ( Patricia Arquette in a bravura dual performance). However, as is typical for Lynch, the objective reality quickly disappears behing a veil of ominous images, allusions and understatements. . From that point on, Fred’s reality will become a bizarre journey along the eponymous highway. The eerie atmosphere of Lynch’s work is further enhanced by a fantastic soundtrack featuring artists such as David Bowie, Angelo Badalamenti, Lou Reed, Barry Adamson, and Trent Reznor.
